NED KELLY HOUSE  

Free-standing federation home modernised for a young family.

The design is anchored by two contemporary windows inserted into the previously un-renovated dwelling. The wide horizontal ‘Ned Kelly’ internal opening in the Lounge frames the Turpentine Eucalyptus forest to the rear of the property, and the deep square bay dining window offers a touch more elbow room and an informal spot to perch.

These two windows have been demarcated with solid spotted gum reveals, introducing a new material to the spaces, linking to the bushland beyond.

The third unique aperture is the south facing skylight to the kitchen which has been strategically positioned above the joinery. The lining to the reveal is the same laminate finish used on the pantry door panels. This breaks the ceiling plane and allows the natural diffuse light to fall down the coloured surface, uninterrupted by frame or re-entrant angle.

To unify the design throughout the building the existing timber floorboards have been cut, stained and sealed. A smokey-brown tone was selected to give the young family a calm and attractive domestic space.
